Relocating to a different city or nation can prove both thrilling and rewarding, yet leaving familiar surroundings behind often feels overwhelming. Nevertheless, many who venture abroad discover they actually favour their new environment – and Luka Larkin is amongst these expatriates.

The young woman set herself the ambitious target of relocating to China in 2025. And just last month, she achieved this goal. She embarked on a 13-hour journey from Manchester to Shanghai, establishing her new life in a city centre flat.

She currently operates as a pharmacist near the magnificent Oriental Pearl Tower. The British resident has since revealed details about her transformed lifestyle following her Chinese relocation, which she claims “beats the UK by a mile”.

Via her TikTok account, Luka expressed feeling “so lucky” after completing the transition. Below are nine key insights regarding the workplace culture she’s now encountering…

1. Companies supply meals

Luka explained: “All food is free, it’s normal for employers to give free lunch in China. If you have leftover lunch money, you can use it for snacks.”

2. Afternoon rest is encouraged

The British expatriate noted: “It’s normal to sleep in the office at lunch time.”

3. It’s high-tech

Luka disclosed that numerous workplaces feature temperature scanners upon arrival, helping identify unwell staff members and preventing illness transmission amongst colleagues.

4. Excellent facilities

Luka’s workplace boasts impressive amenities, as she described: “The office has two gyms and a yoga studio that offers daily classes.”

5. Tranquil spaces

The perks of the job aren’t just about staying fit and productive; there’s also a dedicated space for relaxation.

The employee showcased a serene “library room with a water fountain”, presenting an idyllic spot for some downtime.

6. Massages

In terms of unwinding, employees can indulge in massage chairs. Luka mentioned: “We also get a free 15 minute physio massage every week.”

7. Less childcare costs

Luka disclosed a fantastic benefit for parents: “Employees with children are allowed to bring them in during summer holidays!”.

8. Nice views

Working in bustling metropolises like Shanghai means enjoying stunning urban vistas. From her office, Luka enjoys views of landmarks such as the Pearl Tower.

9. Beautiful scenery everywhere

The workplace isn’t just a concrete jungle; Luka highlighted the verdant areas surrounding her office. There are fresh vegetables being cultivated and an array of beautiful trees.

Luka’s rundown of workplace benefits has sparked a wave of comments from impressed viewers.

One enthused: “I love working in China.” Another exclaimed: “Wow China has it right! The napping on lunch would help so many people.”

A third declared: “Ok I’m ready to work in China.” A fourth suggested: “Normalise sleeping in the office, I love this.”

Another shared their fond memories: “I love China. The work lunches are the most delicious things ever, I think about them every day.”

And another commenter concluded: “So cool, the rest of the world needs to watch and learn.”
