Netflix 'masterpiece' by Weapons writer leaves viewers with 'clammy palms'

Marketed as a horror-mystery hybrid, Weapons chronicles a community left reeling following the vanishing of all but one pupil from the same school class.

The new film from writer-director Zach Cregger arrives in UK cinemas today (August 8) and boasts a stellar ensemble cast featuring Julia Garner (Inventing Anna, Ozark), Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange, 3 Body Problem), Josh Brolin (The Goonies, Deadpool 2) and June Raphael (Grace and Frankie, Bride Wars).

Viewers who relish this latest offering, which critics have hailed as an “instant classic”, might be eager to explore additional titles from Cregger’s catalogue.

The versatile talent (encompassing writer, director, comedian and performer amongst other roles) stands behind several genre-defying productions from recent years, including 2025’s Companion and one particular hidden treasure that garnered glowing reviews.

Barbarian, which premiered in 2022, boasts a near-flawless Rotten Tomatoes score alongside an impressive cast, reports the Mirror.

The production currently maintains a 92 per cent critics’ rating on the platform, though audiences proved slightly less generous with a 70 per cent score.

The thriller, penned and helmed by Cregger, features Georgina Campbell (The Watchers) and Bill Skarsgård (Nosferatu, It) as Keith and Tess, two strangers who discover they’ve both reserved the identical rental accommodation simultaneously.

Despite her initial reservations regarding Keith, Tess opts to remain for the evening as she lacks alternative lodging. However, they soon realise that there’s more to the property – owned by the disagreeable landlord AJ (Justin Long) – than initially apparent, and they might not be its only inhabitants.

The film is currently available for streaming on Netflix with a subscription, or for rent from YouTube, Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video for £3.49.

If you’re still deciding whether to give it a go, one enthusiastic viewer penned a glowing review: “Barbarian is a masterpiece. It’s one of the most unique horror films I’ve seen in a very long time. I suggest this movie to everyone I know so at this point I give it a good 11/10.”

Another cinema enthusiast added: “Not sure how so many people gave this such low scoring. From a true horror fan – this cuts the cake. Has a great way of showing a human and superhuman element of evil in one storyline.”

Meanwhile, a third chimed in: “Truly one of the BEST movies I’ve watched in a long time. It’s rare to see a movie these days that can actually surprise you. Incredible suspense the entire time- palms clammy, in a good way.”
