Japanese maples ought to be thriving with vibrant colours in summer, yet these delicate trees may drop their leaves early without proper watering. Gardeners need to stay alert with their Japanese maples when temperatures climb, as their surface-level roots can find it difficult to retain moisture.
Fortunately, this issue can be resolved. With abundant sunshine, the earth surrounding Japanese maples faces quick dehydration, making their leaves vulnerable to solar scorching. Carelessness could result in foliage curling, withering, and falling off, leaving the tree bare during the summer period.
But Kiersten Rankel from Greg, a plant care specialist, has pointed out that keeping your Japanese maple well-hydrated in blazing weather is straightforward when you apply mulch.
Kiersten said: “Summer’s heat demands vigilance. Your tree’s not just surviving; it’s trying to thrive. Deep, less frequent watering beats shallow daily sips.
“Mulch is your ally, keeping roots cool and moist. Remember, a well-watered maple won’t throw shade but will surely appreciate it.”
The practice of mulching, spreading organic material on the top layer of a plant’s earth not only nourishes it but during warmer periods, it also acts as a reservoir for water storage.
This preserved moisture from the mulch slowly filters into the ground, guaranteeing the Japanese maples remain adequately watered and healthy, thereby continuing to display their magnificent crimson leaves throughout the summer.
Having a layer of mulch around Japanese maples aids in protecting the leaves from scorching and also assists in preventing weeds, thus reducing one dreaded gardening task this summer.
Mulches that can hold a significant amount of water but are lightweight tend to be the most suitable for Japanese maples, such as pine bark, wood chips, garden compost or leaf moulds.
Avoid nitrogen-rich mulches like cow manure, as they encourage excessive growth, which can stress Japanese maples during warm weather when they need to conserve energy.
When applying mulch, ensure that an even, thin layer is added around the tree and kept away from the trunk, as too much can hinder the roots’ ability to breathe.
Once you have mulched your Japanese maples, make sure to thoroughly soak the soil once a week to help the tree stay cool throughout the warm weather.
If you mulch and deeply water your Japanese maples, their leaves should remain vibrant red throughout the summer, allowing you to enjoy a thriving garden without having to potter about with a watering can.
