Holidays aren’t the same without them: 55% of Brits have ditched travel plans | Travel News | Travel

Britain truly stands as a nation of canine enthusiasts with 76% of owners longing to bundle up their beloved pet and whisk them away on holiday, new research reveals.

However, whilst 73% declare a getaway is enhanced with their four-legged companion by their side, over half (53%) confess that locating pet-welcoming lodgings proves a complete headache.

This situation leaves three quarters of owners feeling remorseful about abandoning their furry friend, the survey by dog food brand Cesar discovered.

Remarkably, 55% of people have scrapped or altered their travel arrangements because the location wasn’t appropriate for their animal.

When questioned about their dog’s ideal travel wishlist, UK dog owners were definitive regarding their pets’ preferred activities.

The most favoured options included a seaside excursion or dip in the ocean (51%), a rural ramble or woodland stroll (43%), a dog-welcoming road adventure (41%), accommodation in a snug lodge or cottage (34%), plus the essential social gathering with fellow canines (28%).

To assist those eager to vacation with their hound, Cesar has partnered with TripAdvisor to unveil the Ulti-mutt Bucket List Dog Travel Guide.

The guide features pet-accommodating lodgings and activities that owners and their four-legged companions can relish together.

Stephen Judson, Senior Principal Client Partner at TripAdvisor commented: “We’re already the go-to for millions of travellers looking for trusted recommendations. By collaborating with Cesar, we’re helping even more people feel confident about travelling with their dogs.

“From finding the perfect dog-friendly cottage to discovering that beach café where your pup gets their own little treat, we want to take the guesswork out of planning and help make holidays better for dogs and humans alike.”

Beyond accommodation, pet owners encounter numerous obstacles when travelling with their furry companions, including transport difficulties (35%) and dogs becoming stressed or anxious (30%).

The packing phase itself creates problems, with 60% of owners forgetting essential items for their dog, such as poo bags (42%), food or water bowls (29%), sufficient meals (26%) or their dog’s favourite toy (25%).

To tackle dog-related holiday stress, Dr Tammie King, Pet Behaviourist at Waltham Petcare Science Institute, offers several expert recommendations to ensure both owners and their four-legged friends enjoy their break.

“Get your dog used to being in the car when stationary by feeding favourite treats or a meal, then slowly building up the journey duration before you commit to a long trip,” she advises. “Familiarity helps reduce travel-related stress.”

Detailing how to pack for your pet, she continues: “Keep a checklist of your dog’s key items in a notebook or on your phone to make prep stress-free.

“Don’t forget comfort items like their bed or favourite toy, and ensure you bring enough food and water, as well as bowls, and any prescription medication.”

It’s also a brilliant idea to keep microchip details current and have an ID tag with your contact information attached to their collar. If a dog goes astray in an unfamiliar place, it will be much simpler for others to return your pooch home safe and sound.

However, the most crucial thing is to choose your destination wisely – you need a holiday spot with secure outdoor spaces for walks and pet-friendly facilities.

If you require assistance in choosing where to go, you can discover top-rated UK dog destinations, and find travel tips here.
