Retirees shun seaside favourites for hidden gems as new hotspots emerg | UK | News

More retirees are turning their backs on traditional coastal favourites and heading to some surprising new locations, according to a fresh report that could reshape Britain’s retirement map.

The research, carried out by McCarthy Stone in response to concerns from older people about losing their sense of connection when relocating, found soaring demand for developments in lesser-known towns. Wimborne, Sutton Coldfield and Stratford-upon-Avon top its latest list of under-the-radar retirement spots for 2025, reports GB News.

Instead of sticking to well-known retirement hubs, more over-65s are now prioritising ready-made communities, convenience and peaceful surroundings. The study revealed that 23 per cent of retirees want to downsize to homes that suit their lifestyle, while 24 per cent say peace and quiet is a key factor in choosing where to live next.

Chrissy Fice, Marketing Director at McCarthy Stone, said: “With access to local amenities being named as the top ‘must-have’ by three quarters of over 65s, other things people are looking for include good transport links, handy supermarkets, a central location within a 15-minute walk, and either a coast or country backdrop.”

Which town topped the retirement list?

Wimborne in Dorset has been named the top hidden gem. The charming market town offers riverside tranquillity and culture, with attractions such as the Tivoli Theatre and nearby Kingston Lacy. Judith Kent, 75, who recently moved to McCarthy Stone’s Market House development, said: “Wimborne is full of hidden gems waiting to be discovered… In Bournemouth I didn’t leave the house very often… But now, I can simply walk to the communal lounge or bistro in the development where there are always lots of people to chat to. It’s given me a sense of purpose.”

The best of the rest

Sutton Coldfield in the West Midlands boasts one of Europe’s largest urban parks and combines green space with easy access to Birmingham and cultural spots like Sutton Arts Theatre.

Stratford-upon-Avon offers history and theatre life alongside riverside walks and a strong community spirit.

Other up-and-coming destinations include Waltham Abbey in Essex with its medieval architecture and green spaces; Beverley in East Yorkshire for its peaceful yet lively setting; Rugby in Warwickshire with its arts scene and transport links; Harleston in Norfolk for countryside charm; Hook in Hampshire for village life and rail connections; Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire for green spaces and museums; and Olney on the Great Ouse for its vibrant social calendar.

Fice added: “These aren’t just familiar destinations – they’re places with unique character, often just waiting to be discovered.

“Whether you crave a gentle pace, stimulating social life or simply a sense of belonging, each of these towns deliver on what many retirees are seeking.

“Our research confirms that retirees are looking for vibrant, connected, yet peaceful locations where their happiness and independence come first.”
