'I read fantasy books all the time but only one has ever kept me up all night'

Regardless of your preferred genre, it’s undeniable that fantasy, or more precisely, romantasy, is currently one of the fastest-growing genres. And like many others, my renewed interest in reading last year was largely due to the allure of romantasy novels.

But over time, I can’t help but notice that more and more books seem to be trying to replicate the successful formula of popular books like Sarah J. Maas’ A Court of Thorns and Roses and Rebecca Yarros’ Fourth Wing, rather than bringing something new to the table. Think BookTok-friendly novels, complete with interchangeable romantic leads and a smattering of familiar tropes. However, I’m delighted to announce that after months of searching for my next five-star fantasy read, I’ve finally found it.

Allow me to introduce: Silvercloak by L K. Steven.

Silvercloak marks the adult debut for acclaimed author Laura Steven, known for young adult titles such as Our Infinite Fates and Society for Soulless Girls, reports the Mirror.

The story centres around Saffron, a relentless detective compelled to go undercover within a ruthless mafia of dark magicians after her deepest secret is revealed on the eve of her graduation from the prestigious Silvercloak Academy.

In a realm where magic is powered by pleasure and pain, Saff must grapple with intriguing prophecies, competing gangs, and the rather inconvenient issue of her burgeoning feelings for the kingpin’s tormented son.

I really enjoyed Our Infinite Fates when I first read it earlier this year, so I approached Silvercloak with a sense of optimism. However, this book completely surpassed my expectations; I was captivated from the very first chapter.

The world of Ascenfall feels genuinely unique, and the romance in this book is also a refreshing change of pace.

As anyone who has read Our Infinite Fates will already be aware, Steven is a master at crafting the enemies to friends to lovers to enemies dynamic, and the evolution of Saff and Levan’s relationship, from its first steps to its prophesised conclusion and beyond, is a standout feature of this book.

I must confess I’m somewhat of an chaotic reader, often juggling a physical book or two along with an audiobook for when I’m cooking or walking my dog.

However, I found it impossible to put Silvercloak down, even going as far as purchasing the audiobook so I could switch between the two.

I was thoroughly engrossed in the story right up to the final page and after staying up all night to finish it, I’m now desperate to read the next instalment in the series. If you’re planning on reading one fantasy novel this summer, make it this one.

Silvercloak is available for purchase now from Waterstones. Alternatively, you can order your copy from Amazon.
