England dressing room’s mood as they chase mammoth India lead | Cricket | Sport

Josh Tongue says he and his team-mates are relaxed about England’s challenge of chasing down 374 runs to clinch victory at The Oval on Sunday, citing the team’s track record of defying expectations this summer. He reflected on past successes, saying: “We’re pretty chilled, we’re not over-thinking it.”

Tongue, who took his second five-wicket haul in six Tests and leads England’s wicket-taking in the series, added: “I was asked the same question (on the fourth evening) at Headingley, and I don’t see why we can’t chase down these runs again. How we play as a batting unit is positive and exciting, and with the line-up we’ve got I can’t see why we can’t give it another good go.

“It will be a great day for us if we get the runs. A few balls tonight jumped off a good length but if you get through the first hour who knows.

“The heavy roller definitely impacted the pitch. We had to work hard to get the wickets today. Hopefully it will flatten it out for us tomorrow.

“The batting line-up we have is unbelievable if we can build partnerships who knows where we might be. Fingers crossed I am not required but if it comes down to me at the end I will give it a good crack.”

Tongue bounced back from a disastrous opening over, which leaked 11 wides on its own, to claim eight wickets across the match.

He confessed: “Sometimes I didn’t bowl the best I can, especially that first over, but I know when I land the ball in the right areas I’ve got a good chance of taking wickets.

“As soon as I got over that first over, I was happy to take wickets for the team and it helped my confidence.”

England were frustrated by six dropped catches which permitted nightwatchman Akash Deep to compile a maiden Test half-century and opener Yashasvi Jaiswal a brilliant hundred in which he was given three lives by the hosts’ sloppy fielding.

However, Jaiswal’s century remains comfortably the highest score in the match thus far and he reflected: “The wicket played as I expected in England, so mentally I was ready for it. It is not easy on this wicket. We are really confident and we will try our best.

“I wanted a bigger score and I was disappointed to get out the way I did, but I worked really hard in my practice session. I was thinking, ‘one last push’ and I enjoyed it.”
