Time to switch to a Mac? Best alternatives as Windows 10 end of life l

It’s been coming for months, but Windows 10 is officially about to lose all free support from Microsoft. This ageing operating system is being sent to the history books, with those still using it facing the nightmare of no software updates, bug fixes, or new features being released. Microsoft has said it will offer Extended Security Updates (ESUs), but these will only repair known glitches and nothing else. ESU’s will also have a yearly fee attached to them and won’t be free.

This clearly presents a conundrum for Windows 10 users, as there are plenty of different options to consider, including switching to an Apple MacBook or iMac.

If you are still using Windows 10, here is a quick guide to what’s available.

SIMPLY STICK WITH WINDOWS 10

Yes, you can simply keep using Windows 10 as it won’t actually stop working when the October 14 deadline arrives. Just be aware that Microsoft will no longer offer free support from that date, and you must pay extra to get those vital security updates.

Once October arrives, your PC will also lose access to any shiny new features in the future.

UPGRADE TO WINDOWS 11

Of course, one of the easiest things to do is simply switch over to Windows 11. Once installed, your PC will be kept up to date, and you’ll get all the latest upgrades that are pushed out throughout the year.

The only issue is that some older PCs simply aren’t compatible with Windows 11 and that means you may need to buy something new. There are loads of laptops and desktop devices on the market with prices starting from as little as £169.

DITCH IT AND SWITCH OVER TO APPLE

There’s always been a big divide between Mac and Windows users but things have been slowly changing. Firstly, Apple’s range of MacBooks are now far more affordable than many think with the firm’s latest M4 Air starting from under £1,000.

Not only are these machines supremely powerful, but they also run all of Microsoft’s popular fleet of applications, such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. It’s even now easier to switch from one machine to another with a simple click, doing all the hard work for you. In fact, Apple’s clever Migration Assistant will transfer your contacts, calendars, email accounts from your Windows PC to the appropriate places on the Mac.

Of course, Apple’s machines are renowned for their build quality, years of free upgrades and impressive re-sale value. Other features include ludicrous battery life, MagSafe charging, fingerprint scanner and market-leading Force Touch trackpad.

GET A DESKTOP INSTEAD

Do you need a laptop or would a desktop be better? Once again, Apple could be the way to go. The firm offers its stunning iMac PCs which offer a pin-sharp 4.5K Retina screen and computer with M4 chip built into one striking device. The iMac comes in numerous colours – including Blue, Purple, Pink and Orange – with prices starting from £1,249.

Sound too expensive? There’s also the more affordable Mac mini which recently had a major redesign. Despite its tiny form factor, this PC packs quite a punch thanks to its M4 processor. It also now includes USB ports on the front for more easy access and starts from just £599.

Those wanting to stick to Windows will still find plenty of options with HP and Acer also still producing all-in-one desktop PCs. Prices start from around £600.

MOVE TO A CHROMEBOOK

Don’t fancy splashing out on a MacBook? There are cheaper Chromebook options including the latest Winows and Apple alternative from Lenovo. The firm’s new Chromebook Plus packs a powerful processor, pin-sharp 14-inch OLED screen, 17-hour battery life and speedy Wi-Fi 7 technology.

It also has plenty of smart Google upgrades, such as auto image editing baked in.

It’s out now and starts from just £599.

WHY NOT TRY A TABLET

If all you do is send the odd email and surf the web on your laptop, you might find a tablet is a better option. Those who love Android will find a swathe of devices from firms such as Samsung, Honor and Xiaomi. The team at OnePlus recently announced a new Pad Lite which costs just £199.

Of course, there’s also the iPad. Apple recently refreshed its lineup of tablet devices to include a new entry-level model and feature-packed iPad Air, which now features the mighty M3 processor.

With a keyboard case attached, the Air feels just as powerful as a laptop plus you can scribble on the screen using the Apple Pencil.
