Europe is home to many beautiful and historic train stations that have witnessed the passage of time, from significant historical events to countless passengers travelling with their own stories and journeys. These stations have long played a vital role in connecting people and places across the continent. Among them, one stands out not just for its history, but for its sheer scale and beauty.
Leipzig Hauptbahnhof, located in Leipzig, Germany, is Europe’s largest train station by floor area, covering an incredible 898,400 square feet, the equivalent of over 11 football pitches. It’s not only the biggest, but often described as one of the most beautiful train stations in the world.
Its striking architecture, including beautiful domes and grand stonework, makes it feel more like a palace than a public transit hub.
The station features about 19 overground platforms set beneath six iron train sheds, a multi-level concourse with towering stone arches, and a 978-foot-long façade along Leipzig’s Inner City Ring Road.
Beyond travel, it also doubles as a massive shopping destination, with over 140 shops and restaurants spread across three levels.
Around 80 businesses are also open on Sunday afternoons.
First opened in 1915, the station was completely renovated in the 1990s and in 2013, it gained even more importance with the opening of the City Tunnel where all lines of the Central German S-Bahn to pass directly beneath the station.
One person wrote on TripAdvisor: “At the Hauptbahnhof in Leipzig you can not only arrive or depart in style, because it is the biggest train station of its kind in Europe, but you can also find everything else. The huge and recently modernised supermarkets here (Aldi and Rewe) are also open on Sunday.
“There is free wifi, a post office, a shoe repair place, a nerdy shop for science fiction merch, clothes, organic shops, a cheese shop, different choices of food like Indian, sushi, French fries, etc.
“There is also a fruit shop, a butchery and some bakeries, also on the platforms where the trains depart. Downstairs there are also some interior design stores, shoe shops and a shop that sells paper and stationery.”
Someone else said: “Must see station. This is by far the most beautiful and most clean station I have ever seen. If all train stations would be like this it would be a great joy to travel by train.”
