From the trenches of World War I to the chaos of modern urban conflict, war films have long captured the drama, sacrifice, and moral complexity of battle.

Netflix UK currently offers an impressive selection of titles spanning history, geography, and perspective—whether you’re drawn to epic period pieces, hard-hitting realism, or intimate character studies.

To help you choose your next gripping watch, we’ve ranked the top 7 war films available on Netflix right now based on their IMDb scores.

Here are the must-see war films streaming on Netflix:

The Six Triple Eight (2024)

7. The Six Triple Eight (2024)

IMDb Score: 6.7

This recent Netflix original recounts the inspiring true story of the only all-Black, all-female battalion to serve overseas during World War II. Led by Emmy-winner Kerry Washington as Major Charity Adams, the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion overcame racism and sexism while working to clear a massive backlog of mail for American soldiers in Europe.

The film was directed by veteran filmmaker Tyler Perry and features a strong supporting cast including Oprah Winfrey and Susan Sarandon. The Six Triple Eight has been praised for shining a light on an often-overlooked chapter of military history and celebrating resilience in the face of adversity.

6. ‘71 (2014)

IMDb Score: 7.2

Set amidst the turmoil of the Troubles in Belfast, this British thriller stars Jack O’Connell in a breakout performance as a young British soldier accidentally separated from his unit during a riot. Directed by Yann Demange (later known for White Boy Rick and Lovecraft Country), ‘71 is lauded for its realism and suspense.

The film features early appearances from Barry Keoghan alongside established actors Sean Harris and Richard Dormer. Critically acclaimed upon release, it earned nominations at the BAFTAs and British Independent Film Awards.

Darkest Hour

5. Darkest Hour (2017)

IMDb Score: 7.4

This Oscar-winning historical drama stars Gary Oldman in his Academy Award-winning role as Winston Churchill. Set during Britain’s darkest days at the onset of World War II, Churchill must decide whether to negotiate with Hitler or fight on against overwhelming odds.

Directed by Joe Wright (Atonement, Pride & Prejudice), Darkest Hour also features Kristin Scott Thomas and Lily James. In addition to Oldman’s Best Actor win, the film received five other Oscar nominations including Best Picture.

Beasts of No Nation

4. Beasts of No Nation (2015)

IMDb Score: 7.7

Directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga (True Detective, No Time To Die), this harrowing drama follows Agu (Abraham Attah), a young boy who becomes a child soldier under a ruthless commander portrayed by Idris Elba (who received a BAFTA nomination for his role).

As one of Netflix’s first major original films, Beasts of No Nation won critical acclaim for its raw performances and unflinching depiction of war’s impact on children. It collected awards from the Independent Spirit Awards and Venice Film Festival.
