Fitbit just gave four of its trackers a free update – is yours on the list?

If you have one of the latest Fitbit devices strapped to your wrist, you have a software update waiting to download – and one tracker in particular is getting more new goodies than the others.

Although Fitbits from years ago are still working in 2025, the firm now only seems to be sending out free software updates with new features and bug fixes to the four most recent trackers released, which are 2022’s Fitbit Inspire 3, Fitbit Versa 4 and Fitbit Sense 2, and 2023’s Fitbit Charge 6.

That’s right, we’ve gone nearly two years since the Charge 6 was released in September 2023 with no signs of any new devices.

Google acquired Fitbit in 2021 and has incorporated the Fitbit app and platform into its Pixel Watch smartwatches, even suggesting we’ll never see another Fitbit branded smartwatch again.

Despite this, Fitbit has just announced a software update for all its trackers, but it’s the newer Fitbit Charge 6 that gets the most noticeable free upgrade.

The firm published a blog post detailing the update, which brings three new clock faces to the capable wearable. You should be able to find the update to install using the Fitbit app on Android or iPhone.

“We heard you! Thanks to your feedback, the Fitbit Charge 6 now has three new clock faces to choose from—Axira, Geometric, and Momentum,” Fitbit said. “They’re designed to provide you with more comprehensive data at a glance, and allow for quick access to key health and fitness metrics directly from your wrist.”

It seems as though Fitbit users – who can be quite vocal on Fitbit’s official online forums – have asked for more data-dense watch faces for the Charge 6. This must be a little tricky for Fitbit to do given the tracker has a tiny 1.52-inch vertical screen, but it appears the brief has been met (see below image).

As well as the new watch faces that could give your Fitbit a little lick of paint, the Charge 6 is also receiving wider compatibility with exercise machines, “allowing you to connect to a wider variety of equipment and see your real-time heart rate on display during your home or gym workouts”, according to Fitbit.

The Fitbit can connect to the below fitness equipment and apps using Bluetooth:

  • Peloton Bikes, Treads and Rows
  • iFit (NordicTrack)
  • Concept2
  • Tonal
  • Hydrow and Hydrow Wave
  • Spinning bikes and mobile app
  • Echelon
  • Strava

“Your Charge 6 might work with other equipment/apps not listed here, but not all Bluetooth-compatible devices and apps will connect or behave similarly. Additional devices and apps will be added to this list in the future,” Fitbit notes on a support page.

If you own the Inspire 3, Versa 4 or Sense 2, the update you’ll be receiving is far less exciting, unfortunately, merely bringing “general bug fixes and improvements”.

That said, it’s good to see Fitbit continuing to fix issues on trackers that are approaching three years old. Even if the firm seemingly isn’t in a rush to bring out new hardware, fixing issues with its existing products should be commended.
