Nothing beats a proper sandwich when those midday hunger pangs strike. Yet those soggy and uninspiring fillings like basic cheese, salad, or ham simply won’t cut it, so that’s when you need to pull out all the stops. A BLT — bacon, lettuce and tomato sarnie — is truly difficult to surpass.

It’s a timeless classic for good reason, but if you fancy mixing things up with a fresh twist on this beloved favourite, then one recipe is definitely worth trying. It involves swapping out the bacon for a delicious and nutritious substitute that still delivers that distinctive smoky, savoury taste, reports the Express.

Tofu, a plant-based protein derived from soybeans, can be utilised to mimic bacon in your BLT and serves as a brilliant choice if you’re attempting to reduce your meat consumption.

A mouth-watering tofu BLT recipe was recently posted on TikTok by BOSH!, a duo of vegan chefs who have been penning cookbooks and sharing recipes online for years.

They explained: “Do you want to know the secret to a perfect sandwich? Crispiness, contrast, crunch. And this tofu lettuce tomato has them all.”

The clip was also posted on Instagram, where viewers in the comments were brimming with enthusiasm. One person remarked: “I made this and it was delicious!” whilst another branded it “divine”.

Tofu BLT recipe

Ingredients – for the filling

One block firm smoked tofu

One tbsp soy sauce

One tbsp maple syrup

One tbsp tomato purée

One tsp smoked paprika

One tsp liquid smoke (optional)

One tbsp olive oil

Two large tomatoes

Little gem lettuce

Ciabatta loaf

For the chilli maple mayo

Three tbsp vegan mayo

One tsp chilli crisp oil

One tsp maple syrup

Method

Slice the tofu into very thin trips, using a cheese peeler or knife. Mix the soy, maple, tomato purée, paprika, and liquid smoke.

Slice the tomatoes, chop up the lettuce and halve the ciabatta. Marinate the tofu strips and pan-fry them in olive oil until they turn golden, sticky, and smoky.

For the dressing, mix vegan mayo, chilli crisp, and maple syrup together.

Finally, toast your ciabatta, spread it with the chilli-maple mayo, and add layers of tofu, tomatoes, and lettuce. Cut the sandwich into pieces and savour every bite.
