Keeping white clothing bright can be a challenge, as they’re prone to discolouration, yellowing and stains. There are many hacks available to try to brighten whites, but an expert has offered a “simple” and “cost-effective” solution for just 69p.
What’s more, you probably already have it in your home. Thomas Bird, textiles expert and owner of Fabric Online, said: “Lemon juice is a natural and affordable solution to making your whites even whiter. Lemons contain citric acid, a natural bleaching agent that effectively breaks down even the toughest stains.
“Unlike chemical whiteners, such as bleach, it lifts stains from your clothes without the risk of damage, making it the perfect alternative for brightening your whites.”
Beyond its stain-fighting power, lemon juice can also leave your clothes smelling fresh, eliminating any unpleasant odours.
Whilst it “works wonders” on whites, it shouldn’t be used on coloured fabrics due to its bleaching effect.
To use lemon juice to brighten whites, simply start by squeezing three lemons into a glass, which should equal about half a cup of juice.
Add the lemon juice directly to your washing machine along with your regular laundry detergent.
Set your washing machine to the normal spin cycle and let the “magic” happen.
The expert added: “After the wash, let your clothes dry as usual, and watch the noticeable difference as they dry.”
If you can and the weather allows, dry the laundry outside for extra bleaching effects.
