Co-op has just released a tantalising new grape onto its supermarket shelves, and it’s a flavour that is rather curious. The British supermarket chain recently introduced its Mojito cocktail flavoured grapes, promising customers a fresh fruit product to enjoy as a snack or to freeze for summer drinks.
I’m one of many people who buy grapes regularly as part of my supermarket shop, and I am also a major fan of a Mojito cocktail. Naturally, this new product intrigued me. Priced at £2.90, it’s more than I usually pay for grapes. But after trying them, I think it’s actually worth it. Hopes were high going into this one and I’m glad to say, I was not disappointed. A grape that has hints of lime bursting in my mouth was a sensation that blew me away, so much so that I could have eaten the whole punnet in one sitting. I didn’t realise grapes could taste this rich.
Biting into the green fruit, I was met with an explosion of flavours. It really is a cocktail in a grape. The first thing that hit me was the citrus flavour, a major part of a Mojito cocktail and a staple taste of summer.
The juices tasted almost like they were blended perfectly by an expert mixologist, and I couldn’t believe that grapes could be grown to have this immense flavour.
The experience of eating these Mojito cocktail grapes is defined by the massive burst of flavour you get when you bite into them. My only negative critique is that this eruption of taste was an addictive experience and I couldn’t resist going back for more.
There is no alcohol in the Mojito grapes, but I was almost drunk off giddiness from the novelty.
Would I have them again? Let’s just say it’s a good thing that Co-op’s show-stopping summer fruit product is a limited-edition item, because otherwise, I would have a new long-term obsession on my hands.
Grown in Spain, the unique flavour is a result of naturally selecting and breeding one flavour of grape with another.
Introduced to Co-op store shelves on Wednesday, July 23, these new Mojito grapes are available in stores for just a few weeks over the summer.
Kate Byrne-Fletcher, Co-op’s Head of Fresh Produce, commented, said: “We’re expecting this new variety to fly off the shelves and will only be in stores for just a few weeks due to the limited seasonal window.”
