Washing machines are expensive appliances, and so keeping them in great condition can help them to last longer. This includes cleaning it, not overloading it as well as using the right detergent, according to Bosch’s laundry expert Alex Lucas.
The expert said: “Cleaning the washing machine is paramount to the longevity of your machine. Focus on the drum, detergent drawer, and rubber seals.” To clean the drum, run an empty wash with hot water and washing machine cleaner to remove detergent buildup and bacteria.
Many models may have a dedicated drum cleaning programme to do so. After, remove and wash the detergent drawer, giving it a good wipe to prevent mould. Lastly, wipe down the rubber seals, making sure to do this after every wash to prevent mildew and mould.
The expert added: “Different detergents work better at different temperatures. Liquid detergents are best for cold washes as powder doesn’t dissolve as well in colder cycles. Choose detergents that are specially formulated for cold cycles if you regularly wash at lower temperatures.”
When it comes to putting laundry in the appliance, it’s crucial that it isn’t overloaded. Putting too much in the drum can place strain on the motor and hamper the cleaning performance.
The laundry expert said: “A good rule of thumb is that you should be able to fit your fist between the top of the load and the drum. Clothes need room to tumble and rinse properly.
“An overfilled drum can also cause balance issues, which can damage the machine and pause the cycle.”
Though it’s the most time-consuming chore, cleaning the drain pump should be completed at least once a year.
To do so, firstly, unplug the machine and turn off the water. Then, remove the service flap, drain excess water from the pipe, and unscrew the pump cover. Check for any objects such as coins or hair accessories, then rinse the filter.
Alex continued: “Proper installation plays a big role in your washing machine’s long-term health. It’s important that it’s on a flat, level surface.
“If needed, adjust the feet of the machine to help balance. A level machine reduces vibrations, preventing excess wear and protects internal components.”
