An Australian who has moved to the UK shared what has confused him most about moving 10,000 miles away – even though it might seem normal to most Brits. The man took to TikTok to share his message and these are things Brits might not have even noticed aren’t the same elsewhere.
Marc Murphy, who uses an account under the name of @MurphTox, says he moved to Scotland but experienced a “culture shock”. Commenters on the video say they can’t understand why people would move to the UK from Australia as Marc reveals his biggest shocks. He says: “So I’ve just moved to the UK from Australia about two weeks ago and here are some of the things that already have me a bit confused.”
One of the things he lists is that everywhere sells food, but one place in particular baffled him. He says: “Your pharmacies like your Boots, or our Priceline sell food on the go.
“Your discount stores, your warehouses – everywhere sells meal deals. The Brits love a meal deal here. You just wouldn’t find sushi or sandwiches at a pharmacy in Australia.”
But this isn’t the only thing that confused the man. He shares there seems to be rubbish everywhere, something he is not familiar with seeing in Australia.
He says: “There seems to be a lot of rubbish around – are people littering here or is the wind blowing it? Or, does the trash not get taken enough?
“I don’t understand but people wouldn’t do that in Australia. I don’t know why there’s so much rubbish.”
One other change he didn’t like is that he has been unable to find Vanilla Coca Cola anywhere, which is a favourite of his but appears to be unavailable in the UK, he claims.
According to Road Genius, over 620,000 Australians travelled to the UK in the year ending June 2024, a 14.81% increase from 540,000 visitors during the prior 12-month period.
It says the UK remains a popular destination for Australians, primarily for leisure and family visits, with key attractions including London, Edinburgh, and the English countryside.
