Kitchen gadgets have been around for thousands of years making many people’s lives easier.

Gadgets including cheese graters, steaming pans and colanders were even used by the Romans. Yet despite their many years of use, some of these gadgets’ features are still deceptive today.

One such deceptive feature can be found on graters which will surprise many who pondered what the fourth side of it is actually used for.

The sides of graters are commonly known to help grate food but one section features sharpened, outward ridges with small holes.

The confusion caused a stir on Reddit with one user beckoning the age-old question, what is the fourth side of a graters’ actual purpose?

There are countless kitchen gadgets we use daily in our kitchens with most being obvious as to how they work except for the cheese grater it would seem.

A Reddit user posted the question asking: “Does anybody ever use this part of the grater? What is it even for??”

The author added: “All this has ever done is hurt my hand, but I’ve literally never used those smalls hole graters ever.

“Pretty much just use the other side for making grated cheese.”

This sparked a frenzy of comments with many also scratching their heads as to its purpose with one user commenting that they’ve “assumed it was to make the cheese a bit smaller after grating.

Another user said: “Very handy for shredding cleaning sponges.”

The confusion was dispelled thanks to some savvy chefs who admitted it had taken “years to figure out.”

Turns out the fourth side of graters is for “Parmesan and lemon, orange or lime zest” according to one user.

Another chimed in and said: “Zest hard cheese or garlic nutmeg maybe ginger to make like a paste” with another adding how “potato pancakes come out great with this side!”

The weird side of the grater was also found to help create a light dusting of cheese.

Another hack for the cheese grater was also found by one TikTok user known as Alice who posted a video showing her laying the cheese grater on its side which then helps the shredded cheese to build up inside the appliance, rather than on the kitchen counter.

“They say it’s easier to transport, and it is,” Alice said in the video as she then easily moves her pile of grated cheese into a smalll bowl.

“See, you’re never too old to learn things…. Wow,” she added.
