Men hesitant to change hairstyles but say ‘cool’ animal cut would suit them

The average man has had the same hairstyle for more than a decade. A new poll found most men have stuck with the same hairstyle for so long because they don’t have the confidence to change it, and fear what others might think if they do.

The study shows men settle on their signature style by the age of 31, with short back and sides currently the most favoured cut (35 per cent), followed by the buzzcut (16 per cent). The ‘alpaca back and sides’ – inspired by the animal’s distinctive mane – emerged as another trendy option, especially amongst the 25 to 34 age bracket.

Following research commissioned by Alpacalypse Session IPA from SALT Brewery, a temporary Shearer Shop has opened, exclusively offering the alpaca back and sides cut.

Brewery spokesperson Edd Simpson commented: “We knew Alpacalypse would turn heads – we just didn’t expect it to be at the barbershop. Now everyone wants the alpaca back and sides.”

The research found that of those who are yet to embrace the style most consider it a ‘cool’ cut and also believe it would suit them. A quarter even said they are ‘likely’ to give it a try.

Results showed respondents were most adventurous with their appearance at 22 years old. However, whilst men readily experiment with various aspects like clothing and food, they’re less likely to try something new with their hair.

A third of those surveyed said they ‘might’ be open to changing their hairstyle after a consultation with a trusted stylist, while a fifth confessed they could be tempted by a new look in the wake of significant life events such as a break up or career shift.

The study, conducted via OnePoll, revealed that 38 per cent are concerned about others’ opinions on their appearance, with 28 per cent believing they have more style than their friends.

Participants also shared which animals they believe boast the best hair, with the male lion topping the list, followed by a Samoyed dog, highland cattle, and the alpaca.

Richard Tucker, senior barber at Ruffians, which has teamed up Alpacalypse Session IPA by SALT Brewery, for the pop-up added: “We’re delighted to host the Alpacalyse Shearer Shop as Brits embrace a new look.”
