How to make tuna mayo sandwiches tastier with unusual ingredient

When lunchtime rolls around and you’re craving something quick yet delicious, you can never go wrong with a sandwich. There are almost endless filling combinations out there, but the classics are often the best – like a delicious tuna mayo.

It’s one of the easiest sandwich fillings out there, coming together in a matter of minutes, and you don’t need any complicated recipe in order to make it.

However, it’s not always the most exciting option. Thankfully it’s easy to jazz it up and make it a bit tastier, and according to chefs at Simply Recipes, there’s one great ingredient that makes all the difference – and it’s available from every supermarket.

While it’s common knowledge that things like cheese, red onion and avocado can take your tuna mayo to new heights, the experts have shared a little-known trick that can elevate both the flavour and the texture of your sandwich.

Placing a couple of salt and vinegar crisps on top of the tuna mayo before sandwiching the bread together is a foolproof trick for a better tasting bite.

The sharp vinegar taste of the crisps pairs excellently with the tuna and soft bread, creating a delicious contrast that tastes so much better than the filling on its own.

If you really want to elevate your tuna mayo sandwiches, one recipe from the New York Times is worth a shot. However, just crumbling a few crisps into your ordinary tuna mayo recipe can work just as well.

“A tuna salad and potato chip sandwich may not be quite as classic a pairing as peanut butter and jelly, but it is, anecdotally, many middle-schoolers’ first forays into experimenting with flavors and textures, and no less delicious,” notes food writer Kenji López-Alt.

“Beyond crunch, chips also add stability to the sandwich, holding the tuna salad in place as you eat.”

Molly Adams of popular food blog Simply Recipes is also a fan of the tuna sandwich innovation.

Reminiscing about popping crisps into sandwiches at school, she shared: “As a child, sandwich day at school was my very favorite. I can still see in my mind’s eye the tidy sandwich, crisp pickle, and adorable bag of potato chips on my lunch tray.

“I was the kid who took apart her sandwich to sneak a few crispy potato chips inside. At the time, I felt like I’d reached the peak of culinary innovation, instantly upgrading my turkey, tuna, or chicken salad sandwiches with a pop of saltiness and crunch.”
