A gritty neo-Western drama streaming has is “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes, and a fan has urged anyone who hasn’t seen it to do so “immediately”. Hell or High Water (2016) tells the story of bothers Toby and Tanner Howard (played by Chris Pine and Ben Foster, respectively), who resort to carrying out several bank robberies in a desparate attempt to save their family ranch.

But two Texas Rangers played by Oscar winner Jeff Bridges and Gil Birmingham are hot on their trail. The film was directed by Scottish filmmaker David Mackenzie, and written by Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan. One audience reviewer on Rotten Tomatoes described the modern-day take on the genre a “tremendous film of the type that you simply don’t see made very often”.

“If you haven’t seen it, watch it immediately,” they added.

Another put it among 2016’s “best movies”, saying the “modern day Western with its tale of vengeance and brotherly love has all the hallmarks of an “American classic”.

“A well written, beautifully shot movie, that has an excellent soundtrack, it is hard to find too many, if any, flaws with this movie,” they said.

A third called it: “Exceptional and expertly crafted movie which will have you gripped from start to finish.”

Fans were also full of praise for Bridges’ performance as canny lawman Marcus Hamilton.

One said: “Classy, well written, directed, and acted. Oscar worthy performance for Bridges.”

Another said the actor “puts on one of his very best performances”, with a third adding: “Jeff Bridges steals the show as always as he exudes charisma. But all the other actors did a great job.”

The film also has an impressive 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer, which reflects the percentage of Approved Tomatometer Critics who have given the film a positive review.

The film is rated 15 and features strong language, violence, and sex, the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) says, so it may not be for everyone.

Hell or High Water is streaming on Netflix now.
