Journalists are UK’s biggest coffee addicts – beating NHS staff to top spot

Journalists have been crowned as the UK’s biggest coffee drinkers. A recent study involving 20,000 participants has unveiled which profession relies most heavily on a caffeine boost in their daily routine. The research, conducted by Pressat a press release distribution service, looked at the drinking habits of workers across various professions. Journalists narrowly outpaced other high-stress jobs in terms of coffee consumption.

Media professionals were found to consume an average of 3.62 cups per day, potentially due to night shifts and looming deadlines. Healthcare workers, including doctors and nurses, drink 3.6 cups, while police officers, who came third, consume 2.52 cups.

For a fifth of survey participants missing their usual cup of coffee can significantly impact them. However, consuming large amounts of coffee daily can be an expensive habit.

When examining the top five coffee spenders across industries, marketing professionals are shelling out the most cash at £11.49 per day – despite only consuming on average 1.3 cups.

It is possible that extras such as fancy syrups, extra shots, specialty milk or iced drinks – like popular frappes in hot summer weather – play a part in this high cost.

Advertising professionals came in at a close second with a £11.24 daily spend, followed by electricians (£11.22), cops (£11.15), traders (£11.10) and company executives (£11.01).

The survey also highlighted a shift in milk preferences, with plant-based alternatives no longer exclusive to health-conscious or creative sectors.

Police officers are leading the change, with 21.99 percent switching to non-dairy. Plumbers and tradespeople are also exploring new options, with an impressive 20.93 percent swapping cow’s milk for alternatives like oat or soy.

“This is the second survey we’ve conducted to analyse and identify the professions that consume the most coffee,” said Max Forrest, director of Pressat.

“Journalists ranked the highest previously, with healthcare workers rising from fifth to second place. The results were not surprising, especially considering the coronavirus outbreak and NHS budget cuts.

“We fully expected those working on the frontline – such as doctors, nurses, and healthcare staff – to top the list, but journalists remain the reigning champions of coffee drinkers, trembling with caffeine in first place.”
