If you’re heading off on holiday anytime soon, the excitement will no doubt be building already. However, there’s a lot to consider when booking a trip, from luggage allowances to making sure everything is in order for your arrival at the airport. Because the holiday process can be a stressful one at times, the last thing you want is for things to spiral out of control at home.
However, if you don’t make sure your home is clean and tidy before setting off, this can wreak havoc on your property. New research from Sanctuary Bathrooms has revealed that over half of holidaymakers return to costly home issues averaging £300 in repairs, some of which are caused by not cleaning the bathroom properly.
Neglecting a few simple checks in this space could lead to more than just a musty smell when you return home. The research showeed that 18% of Brits often neglect regular bathroom cleaning, which can allow small issues like mould, mildew, leaks and water damage to go unnoticed and quickly escalate into expensive problems if left unchecked.
To help homeowners avoid these issues, James Roberts, Director of Sanctuary Bathrooms, has shared some crucial advice on what to do before you go on holiday. One of these is a very simple task that takes two minutes, but could save a lot of hassle down the line.
Essential bathroom cleaning tip before holidays
One thing you should always do before you jet off for a holiday is clear your bathroom windowsill, according to the experts. This might seem like a pointless task, but it could save you from coming home to a big mess.
This is especially true if you’ve got any makeup, aerosol spray cans or fragrances lying there.
James said: “Sunlight can degrade products and pressurise aerosol cans which can become dangerous so store these in a cool, shaded area.”
This advice was echoed by the experts at Ideal Home, who say aerosols are ‘even worse’ than other cosmetic products when it comes to storing them on the window sill. The sun’s rays can easily penetrate through the glass, even when the window is closed.
The pros warned that they could actually end up exploding due to the way they are packaged.
They said: “Direct sunlight can speed up the breakdown of chemicals in these products, which might not only reduce their effectiveness but also make them unstable. Over time, weakened containers might burst, causing hazards and possibly leading to health risks from inhaling toxic substances.”
