England football legend Paul Gascoigne was rushed to intensive care after being discovered collapsed at his residence.
The 58 year old Gazza is now reported to be in a stable condition and on the mend.
The ex-Tottenham and Newcastle midfielder was found by a mate, barely conscious in his Poole, Dorset home, as per The Sun.
He has since been transferred to an acute medical unit from intensive care where he is said to be recuperating.
Steve Foster, the friend who stumbled upon Gazza, told the Sun: “He would like to thank everyone for the support he’s received so far from so many old friends who wish him well and want to see him back to his best.”
Foster, who escorted the footballer to the hospital, added: “Paul is in hospital, which is the best possible place for him to be right now.”
It is anticipated that Gascoigne will stay in the hospital for a few more days.
Gazza remains one of the nation’s most cherished sporting figures, having risen to prominence in the ’80s and ’90s.
Rising through the ranks at his hometown club Newcastle United, he made his first-team debut in April 1985. After scoring 25 goals in 104 appearances for the Magpies, he transferred to Spurs.
During his time in North London, he played a pivotal role in Tottenham’s FA Cup victory in 1991 and spent four years at the club before joining Lazio. His career also included stints at Rangers, Middlesbrough, Everton, and Burnley.
However, it was with England that Gazza truly won over the hearts of the public. Debuting in September 1988 under Bobby Robson, he became an integral player for the Three Lions, contributing to their memorable journey to the semi-finals of Italia ’90.
In a memorable moment in football history, Gary Lineker signalled to the dugout that Gascoigne was becoming emotional after receiving a booking against West Germany, which would have ruled him out of the final.
England’s journey ended in heartbreak as they were defeated on penalties and failed to reach the final. This led to an emotional Gazza shedding tears on the pitch, kissing his shirt’s badge and acknowledging the cheers from the travelling fans.
Gascoigne was also part of the England team that made it to the semi-finals of Euro 96 on home ground, once again losing to Germany on penalties. His goal against Scotland during the group stage remains one of the most iconic in England’s history.
However, he was controversially left out of the squad for the 1998 World Cup in France by Glenn Hoddle, bringing his international career to a close with 10 goals in 57 appearances.
