Like many people in the UK, I struggle with small amounts of mould in my bathroom. It usually develops on my shower sealant, on the shower door runner and on some of the tile grout. I usually remove this every few months using a generic bathroom cleaning product, or baking soda and white vinegar. However, while these products can be effective, they often require a lot of elbow grease and time.
While I don’t mind cleaning my bathroom, cleaning my shower is one of my most-hated tasks, partly due to the amount of limescale that accumulates over such a short period of time, and how much time it takes to clean around some of the more fiddly components. So when I saw Mrs Hinch fans raving about a particular mould removal product on a Facebook cleaning page, I decided to take the plunge and order a tube.
The product, aptly named Mould Magic, can only be purchased from Must Have Ideas. The ‘bestselling’ cleaning gel claims to remove mould in two to three hours.
I was sceptical, but I was willing to try it if it meant I didn’t have to spend hours scrubbing mould from around my shower.
According to the website, Mould Magic “penetrates deep-down into the surface, eradicating ALL types of mould at the source, so it CANNOT come back – EVER – we GUARANTEE it.”
It can also be used on “any” surface, which is a bonus, as many products can damage chrome and grout if they’re left for too long.
On application, I was surprised at how thick the gel was. I was expecting a thin watery consistency that wouldn’t stay in place on my tile grout, but after a 30-second application, it stayed in place and didn’t move. The same can be said for my shower sealant and the shower runner.
Mould Magic also claims to work on “all” types of mould. I was intrigued by this as it was clear I had two types of mould in my bathroom: black mould on the sealant and an orangey-yellow mould on the grout.
The instructions say to leave it on for two to three hours before wiping it off with a damp cloth. So after applying the formula, I set a timer for two hours and left it to work its “magic”.
The results
Tile grout
My tile grout was a yellow-orange colour before I applied Mould Magic. Now, it’s bright white. In fact, it’s so white, you can see where I didn’t apply the rest of the gel.
I’m so astounded with the results, I’m planning on using the gel on the rest of my tile grout.
Shower sealant
I knew this would be a challenge. The sealant has been replaced once before, so it’s at the stage where it probably needs to be replaced again.
However, the gel managed to remove the worst of the mould, leaving behind a pale brown hue on the sealant. I was very pleased with this result because this mould is usually very stubborn.
Shower runner
This was by far the most impressive transformation. The mould has completely gone, leaving behind a clean shower runner.
Wiping off the gel was incredibly easy. You simply wipe it off with a damp cloth and rinse it. The gel has a slight bleach-like scent but it’s not overpowering.
Overall, I’m incredibly impressed with this product and will be using it regularly to remove mould from other areas of my home.
If you prefer using natural methods, you could try using a mix of baking soda and water to remove stains from your grout or white vinegar to remove mould from your silicone sealant.
