A charming seaside town in Scotland has been scientifically ranked as one of the most colourful places in the world, making it the perfect spot for your next holiday. The town of Tobermory nestled on Scotland’s west coast has beaten famous European rivals to claim spots in the world’s top 25 most colourful places – proving British holidays are world-class.
Listed at number 11 this seaside village on the Isle of Mull is soaked in hues of bright reds, oranges, sunshine yellows and crisp blues thanks to its cheerful waterfront houses. The brightly painted houses which line the harbour made it easier for fishermen to spot their homes and local businesses from the harbour or while out at sea, especially in misty or overcast weather. The buildings are an iconic sight alongside the harbourfront and even served as the filming location for the television series Balamory.
Aside from its gorgeous houses, one of Tobermory’s main attractions is its wildlife.
Boat tours around the bay offer visitors scenic cruises and more adventurous tourists can take a trip with Sea Life Mull to spot minke whales, basking sharks, and bottlenose dolphins in the wild.
There’s plenty to do back on land as well.
One of the most popular attractions is the two hour walking track which takes tourists from the village to Rubha nan Gall Lighthouse.
The track winds along the coastline, offering spectacular views out over the ocean.
If you’d rather sit and chill, you might like the famous Tobermory Distillery where you can sample some of the finest whisky there is.
One of the most iconic distilleries in Scotland, it was established in 1798 and is conveniently located right in the heart of the town.
Visitors can learn about the rich history of whisky making which spans over 200 years, and of course, taste some of the best.
