‘Stop’ bathroom mould with 5 plants that make a ‘real difference’

You can scrub bathroom mould, you can paint it, and you can try to prevent more from growing, but it is often a never-ending battle for households. According to one expert, introducing plants into the bathroom can make a “real difference”.

Peter Jones, director of ADI Leak Detection, said: “After years of dealing with moisture problems in homes, I’ve seen how the right plants can make a real difference. Aside from being pretty decorations, these are working plants that actively pull moisture from the air.”

To help, the expert has shared five bathroom plants which not only survive in steamy conditions but also prevent the damp conditions in which mould thrives.

1. Boston fern

Boston ferns are “little humidity vacuums”, according to the expert. They absorb water through their leaves, which means they’re constantly pulling excess moisture from the air. They prefer indirect light, which makes them great for bathrooms with frosted windows.

2. Peace lily

Peace lilies are “tough cookies” when it comes to bathroom duty. They’re excellent at filtering the air while also soaking up excess humidity. The expert said: “Peace lilies are brilliant because they actually tell you when they need water. The leaves droop dramatically when they’re thirsty, then perk right back up after a drink.”

3. English ivy

The pro explained: “This climbing wonder is a champion at reducing airborne mould spores. Studies have shown English ivy can reduce mould particles in the air by up to 78% in just 12 hours. English ivy is particularly good for bathrooms because it actively fights the mould that’s already trying to establish itself.”

4. Snake plant

If you’re not very green-fingered, snake plants are “nearly indestructible” and work overtime to clean the air in the bathroom. The expert noted: “Snake plants are perfect for people who travel a lot or forget to water. They can go weeks without attention, and they’re still working hard to purify your bathroom air.”

They prefer bright, indirect light but will also tolerate low light if given to them. Water sparingly and make sure not to overwater.

5. Bamboo palm

Bamboo palms help to create that luxury hotel bathroom vibe while also making the space healthier. They like bright, indirect light as well as constant moisture, meaning the bathroom is the perfect location.

The expert explained: “Group your plants together to create a humidity-absorbing powerhouse. Three or four plants working together can make a noticeable difference in a standard-sized bathroom.

“Open windows when possible, run your extractor fan and wipe down wet surfaces. Plants are fantastic helpers, but they work best as part of a complete moisture management strategy.”
