Royal Family experts have weighed in on the chances of reconciliation between Prince Harry and King Charles following the recent meeting that was held between the pair’s communication staff in central London. Speaking on The Sun’s Royal Exclusive show, former Times royal correspondent Valentine Low said: “Prince Harry doesn’t want to betray his father. Yes, he betrayed all those secrets as he wanted to let things out in his Netflix documentary and his book, Spare.”
In a seven-word assessment, he added: “Charles is primarily a father than monarch.” He further said: “It causes Charles immense pain that there is this huge rift in his family. He has said he doesn’t want them to make his last years a misery. Charles will want to explore a reconciliation if this is what this is, and he’s perfectly right to do so.”
The meeting took place at the private members’ club Royal Over-Seas League on July 9, where Harry was represented by his chief of staff, Meredith Maines, as well as his spokesperson, Liam Maguire. Meanwhile, Charles was spoken for by his communications secretary, Tobyn Andreae.
The host of the show, The Sun’s royal editor, Matt Wilkinson, further questioned: “Is there anything Meghan Markle can do to get Harry back on better terms with the Royal Family?”
Broadcaster Sarah Hewson replied: “Meghan is someone with a game plan. Nothing happens by accident. I think Harry relies on Meghan for a lot of guidance through life, particularly now that he doesn’t have anybody else around him to steer him.
“Meghan has her plan. What is Harry’s? I think he does look lost and he does look isolated away from his family. His father’s health is certainly a big wake up call. For these talks to happen, keeping it to the aides at this stage, and then Harry to speak to his father one on one will be really important. There’s a big trust issue as to what they say in these meetings and where it ends up.”
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped back as senior royals and moved to California in 2020. After their exit, the couple aired grievances in interviews, documentaries and in Harry’s 2023 memoir, ‘Spare’.
Meghan Markle has since launched her own brand As Ever, and is set to release series two of her Netflix show ‘With Love, Meghan’ that centres around home, lifestyle and cooking.
Part two of the show is set to air in autumn 2025.
