In a Hollywood tale as old as time, this dynamic duo met while filming their blockbuster film and later became lovers away from the cameras. Not only was there a spark, but their on-screen chemistry was so off the charts that the pair went on to start a family of their own.
Mr & Mrs Smith was the iconic film that introduced two of Hollywood’s biggest names and kickstarted the ‘power couple’ concept. Starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, the film was not only a hit with film fans but also a hit with matchmaking, as the two later on coupled up.
At the time of filming, Pitt was famously in a relationship with Friends actress Jennifer Aniston, but his connection with Jolie seemed to be undeniable. As time passed, the pair admitted that they fell in love during filming.
One Rotten Tomatoes review claims that the chemistry between Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt is “without a doubt undeniable”. Adding to this perception, another viewer wrote: “The storyline isn’t much to write home about, and the comedy isn’t necessarily laugh-out-loud funny, but the action is sleek and stylish, and the chemistry between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie is absolutely phenomenal.”
The hit movie sees them play a wealthy married couple who, unbeknownst to one another, are both highly trained assassins working for two competing agencies. Not only this, but they have both been assigned to kill each other, and now, with their covers blown, they have to choose between their love and the mission.
Although the film itself has received its fair share of criticism, aside from the sultry story off-screen. A viewer shared: “Part of cinema history because of the leading actor’s subsequent marriage, but the film is only sporadically entertaining.
“It loses its way towards the end when the sometimes clever sexual tension gives way to standard action scenes that drain the premise from the plot.” In agreement, another review states that the movie has many overlooked “plot holes”.
After filming, Pitt and Jolie’s chemistry began to spark rumours and, before we knew it, his five-year-long marriage with Aniston came to an end. Just months later, the famous pair were vacationing together and confirmed their relationship in a magazine article.
It wasn’t long before Jolie was expecting her first child with the actor, three months after Pitt’s divorce was finalised. Their relationship only went on to flourish, having children of their own, adopting children and later on tying the knot in 2014.
Brangelina fans were sad to learn about the couple’s split in 2016 after just two years of marriage and a 12-year-long relationship.
Rumours have swirled ever since with regards to their child custody issues, alleged meet-ups and other relationships, but the pair have tried to keep their family life private.
