Family-friendly seaside town is ‘most underrated in the UK’ | UK | Travel

Many holidaymakers have already pencilled in their big holidays for the year, but it’s never too late to indulge in some summertime fun. And one location that’s closer than you think has been described as a ‘hidden gem’ and ‘under-rated’.

St Leonards on Sea, a quaint seaside gem in East Sussex, England, is celebrated for its stunning seafront promenade offering unrivalled views of the English Channel. The town’s architectural heritage is as diverse as it is impressive, ranging from graceful Regency buildings to striking 1930s Art Deco designs, thanks to its founder, the esteemed architect and builder James Burton.

Its allure lies not just in the iconic buildings and sculptures that beg to be photographed but also in the meticulously manicured gardens that provide tranquil spots for visitors to unwind and soak in the beauty of their surroundings.

This delightful coastal spot has been singled out by CN Traveller as one of the “best-underrated trips to take in the UK this summer” and the quintessential location for a classic “buckets-and-spade seaside” break.

They said: “St Leonards on Sea has its own offbeat (and relatively affordable) foodie scene. Head to the colourful huts on the beach for fish baps and ice cream from Goat Ledge.”

St Leonards on Sea also boasts a vibrant culinary landscape with restaurants catering to all palates, from traditional fish and chips to gourmet dining experiences.

Notable local haunts include the welcoming Marina Fountain, known for its delectable Sunday roasts, and The Crown, where visitors can enjoy hearty pub fare.

Another noteworthy spot is The Royal, a popular local eatery celebrated for its relaxed ambience and exceptional, fuss-free cuisine.

Food enthusiasts should also take a look at Heist Market, a vibrant indoor food market situated in a repurposed bank building, offering a taste of local street food and seafood.

St Leonards on Sea boasts a thriving artist community, with numerous art installations and murals scattered throughout the town. One of the most renowned pieces features Sir David Attenborough at the local community art centre.

The town is also home to an array of local art galleries, including the Lucy Bell Gallery, which exhibits local photography of the area, and the Stella Dore Gallery, known for collaborating with graffiti artists to host vibrant exhibitions and contributing significantly to the local artwork scene.

Visitors are invited to leave their mark by adding a love lock to an interactive artwork on the promenade near the beach, creating a lasting memory of their time in this charming town.

After a day of exploration, unwind by watching the sunset at Warrior Square Gardens. Located directly opposite the beach, it houses a rose garden and a notable statue of Queen Victoria gazing out to sea.

Often overshadowed by its more famous neighbour, Hastings, St Leonards on Sea has nonetheless garnered high praise from travellers who have discovered its charm and heartily recommend a visit.

One visitor said: “Stumbled across this hidden gem while travelling to Hasting and loved it. Fab atmosphere with a cool vibe.”

Another happy visitor remarked: “I really enjoyed my stay at St Leonards on Sea. People were lovely and so was the food, a great location not far from the sea, would visit again.”

And yet another satisfied guest wrote: “Great place to have a quiet day out at the beach.”
