The former Emperor of Japan has been admitted to a hospital in Tokyo to undergo treatment for a heart condition, the Imperial Court has said. 91-year-old Akihito, is the father of Japan’s current emperor, Naruhito, and announced his intention to abdicate in 2017, with his actual abdication taking place in 2019.
The Imperial Court announced that he had adjusted the amount of heart medication he takes after he was diagnosed with Myocardial Ischemia, also known as Heart Muscle Ischemia, in May.
