New Look is all set to close another UK store in a major blow to the country’s dilapidated high streets. The popular fashion brand will be closing its branch in Howard Centre, in Welwyn Garden City.
The heartbreaking announcement comes days after closing 11 stores. The shop is “temporarily closed” on Google, leaving many shoppers upset. One person wrote: “The Town Centre is now a ghost town,”, reports Birmingham Live. A second typed: “Feel for those losing their jobs.” A third chimed in: “I’m surprised it’s lasted this long since everything else has shut down……. what will become of the town?”
Another said: “Most of london high streets are either takeaways restaurants or charity shops or Thai massage parlours. The generation of younger people can’t afford a house don’t get to cook and don’t go out – so the pubs are shutting.
“Everyone buys everything online including me! It’s cheaper.” It comes after New Look shoppers were warned of a further 12 closures as the retailer “could be auctioned off”. But A New Look spokesperson said: “We do not comment on rumour and speculation.
“Management are focused on running the company and executing the strategy for long-term growth. The company is trading well and has supportive shareholders”.
Earlier this year, New Look closed 26 stores in Ireland as it exited the Republic of Ireland. At the time, the company said: “New Look’s Irish operation has struggled for some years, impacted by a range of factors including supply-chain and in-market costs, and squeezed consumer spending”.
