Turquoise lake 1 hour from London has water so clear it looks like the Maldives | Travel News | Travel

Kent might be the last place you’d expect to find turquoise waters and floating lodges, but the county has plenty to show off about. Often described as the Garden of England, home to charming cathedrals and rugged shorelines, it’s also the location of one of the UK’s many lakes that’s been compared to the Maldives.

Once the site of a chalk quarry, St Andrews is now a stunning lake located in the Kent countryside with water so clean it’s almost drinkable, although that’s probably not advised. Tucked away in the village of Halling, the lake is so vibrant thanks to the suspended chalk particles in the water reflecting the light. While there is a sandy beach to lounge on, the lake is more well-known for its impressive list of attractions beyond this.

Kayaks, paddle boards and pedalos are all available to rent for a ride over the lake, while sailing courses and swimming are also on the cards if you prefer something less intense, with the water reaching a balmy 22C in summer. However, if you do plan on going for a dip, you’ll have to complete an open water swim induction beforehand.

Perhaps its most famed attractions beyond the dazzling blue water, are the two aqua parks located on the 70-acre lake, with a new addition in the form of a towering water slide called La Jefa making its debut this summer.

While the main aqua park is open to visitors aged six and above, there’s also a kids aqua park  that’s suitable for little ones between the ages of two and six.

It’s not just fun for the kids either, and the wellness experience offers a more grown up excursion of the lake with the access to the sauna, hot tub, plunge lagoon and premium sun loungers and relaxation area.

There’s plenty of fun to be had on dry land too, with a chance to take in the quarry from above by going on the zipwire that measures 33ft above ground. For something equally exhilarating, axe throwing, archery and a 23ft rock climbing tower are also an option

After an action-packed day, St Andrews offers visitors the chance to unwind at one of its floating lodges located on the lake for an overnight stay, all of which feature their own hot tub.

Speaking of their stay, one Tripadvisor user said: “Absolutely lovely. The lodges are gorgeous and I could not get enough of sitting on the deck looking at the beautiful lake.”

Another visitor who stayed in the Coots Lodge added: “Had Coots lodge, unreal views and stunning setting, the smallest fish I saw was 8-10lb, like being in the Maldives.”

Open everyday from 10am, St Andrews is located near Halling and can be reached in 40 minutes if driving from London. Otherwise, visitors can take a train to Halling, which is a 10 minute walk from the lake.

Activities should also need to be booked ahead of time through the lake’s website to avoid any disappointment, especially during the summer months when it can get busy.
