Geraniums will produce more flowers if gardeners complete key task

Geraniums are a classic staple in British gardens, beloved for their vibrant colours, reliable blooms, and ability to thrive in containers, hanging baskets, and beds alike. But while they may be considered low maintenance, there’s one simple task that can dramatically improve their performance, and it only takes a few minutes.

According to advice from a popular geranium blog, regularly removing faded flowers and wilted leaves is the key to healthier plants and more prolific blooming. “Geraniums look more attractive, produce more flowers and stay healthier if you remove faded flowers and wilted leaves regularly,” the blog said.

This process, commonly known as deadheading, helps the plant conserve energy and redirect it toward producing new blooms, rather than putting energy into seed production.

Geraniums are naturally long-blooming, but without this regular care, their flowering potential can be limited.

By simply pinching off faded flowers as they appear and snipping away yellowing or damaged leaves, gardeners can help improve air circulation, reduce the risk of fungal infections, and encourage a steady flush of vibrant blossoms throughout the summer.

For those who prefer an even more hands-off approach, there’s good new, as self-cleaning varieties of geraniums are now widely available.

These cultivars shed their spent flowers automatically, making them particularly appealing to those with busy schedules or less gardening experience.

However, even self-cleaning types need a bit of attention.

“These shed their faded flowers automatically, making them bloom more readily,” the blog said, “but you will still need to remove withered leaves from these geraniums manually.”

Neglecting to do so can lead to a buildup of dead foliage, which not only looks untidy but can also invite pests and disease.

With the summer garden season in full swing, now is the perfect time to give your geraniums a quick tidy.

Whether in window boxes, borders or balcony planters, this small routine task can make a big difference in the health, appearance, and overall impact of your display.

So, next time you’re admiring your geraniums, take a moment to snip off the faded blooms and wilted leaves, it’s a tiny job that reaps big, beautiful rewards.
