New British rom-com that feels "nostalgic" and has 84% Rotten Tomatoes rating

Netflix viewers are getting a front row seat to the highly anticipated return to TV from Lena Dunham with this British meets American rom-com. Following the huge success of her hit sitcom Girls, which spanned six seaons and first aired in 2012. Too Much is a romantic comedy series from Dunham and Luis Felber.

Megan Stalter stars across from Will Sharpe, who is largely known from his role in the second series of The White Lotus. The stellar cast includes Rita Wilson, Emily Ratajkowski and Richard E. Grant among many others. Andrew Scott also has a cameo in the series.

The series synopsis reads: “Too Much follows Jessica (Stalter), a workaholic New Yorker who, in the wake of a devastating breakup, leaves the country and heads across the pond only to meet her unexpected match in sleep-until-noon musician Felix (Will Sharpe).”

At first, the series was met with mixed reviews but it seems to be climbing up the ranks with a Rotten Tomatoes critics rating of 84%. Their consensus states: “A winning showcase for Megan Stalter, Too Much’s approach to modern love is coolly detached but creator Lena Dunham’s sharp sense of humor remains just right.”

A top critic stated: “Yet the level to which Dunham can mine the specificity of these experiences and turn them into something universal is what makes her so good. Her gimlet powers of observation are undiminished.”

“Playful and endearing, the series is a strong return for Dunham. Anchored by a terrific romance, an off-kilter yet charismatic performance from Sharpe, and Stalter’s comedic timing, the series does rom-coms right,” another added.

Another critic said: “The emotional core of Too Much, two people trying to connect in their 30s with the weight of past hurt heavy on their shoulders, is moving and messy and compelling.”

Fans have hailed the show as “nostalgic”, with one stating: “Such an entertaining and clever love story. It feels like a charming blend – part homage to Love Actually, with the the quirkiness of Girls, and a hint of Wuthering Heights, style romantic longing. It was funny, heart-wrenching at moments, silly and a bit over-the-top.”

Too Much is available to stream on Netflix right now.
