How to make air fryer chips taste ‘gourmet’ and crispy

0

If you’ve got an air fryer at home, you’ll know how brilliant they are for cooking quick and tasty meals that are often healthier than using other traditional cooking methods. There are so many things you can make with an air fryer, but sometimes the simple dishes are the best – and homemade chips are definitely up there.

Cooking fries in the oven can take a long time, and deep frying them isn’t the healthiest, so using the air fryer seems like the obvious choice. But if you want yours to taste ‘gourmet’ and crispier than ever, there’s one key ingredient you’ll want to add after cooking. This recipe was shared by food blogger Ana Negoita, and once you’ve tried it, you’ll never make chips another way again.

If you’ve never added parmesan to your fries after cooking, then now is the time to give it a go. Ana says that this ingredient provides a ‘rich and cheesy’ finish to the chips, making them taste ‘gourmet’ and better than you’d get in a restaurant.

It takes seconds to coat the fries in parmesan after they’re finished cooking in the air fryer, but it makes all the difference to the taste.

For an extra crunch, Ana also recommends soaking the cut potatoes in ice water and adding some cornflour to the spice mix – another small yet important step in the process.

Here’s everything you need to make the perfect air fryer chips at home.

Air fryer parmesan chips

Ingredients

  • 800 g potatoes
  • One tbsp cornstarch
  • Two tbsp olive oil
  • One tsp garlic powder
  • One tsp paprika
  • Grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh parsley, chopped

Method

Peel the potatoes and cut them into evenly sized chip shapes. Rinse the slices thoroughly under cold water to remove any excess starch.

Place the potatoes in a large bowl filled with ice and cold water and allow them to soak for 30 minutes. Drain them and pat them completely dry with a clean kitchen towel – this will make them extra crispy.

In a large bowl, combine the dried potatoes with cornflour, olive oil, garlic powder, paprika powder, salt, and pepper. Give them a good toss until the spice mix has coated all of the fries.

Preheat your air fryer to 210C. Then, put the chips in the air fryer in a single layer – you might need to do this in a few batches to avoid overcrowding.

Cook for 18-22 minutes, giving the basket a shake half way through, until you’ve got perfectly crispy, golden brown fries.

When they’re still hot, put them in a bowl and sprinkle on the grated parmesan and parsley, tossing them gently to ensure all the fries are covered.
