When you’re having steak for dinner, what you pair it with is so important. Not just in terms of the sides, whether that’s fries, salad, or green veggies, but also when it comes to sauce.
Peppercorn, bearnaise and chimichurri sauces are all very popular choices, and for good reason. However, if you want to try something a bit different the next time you cook steak, then one chef-approved recipe should be on your radar. Professional cook Thom Bateman recently shared a game-changing recipe for a steak sauce using just a handful of ingredients, and it’ll take the dish to a new level.
Taking to TikTok, the chef—who boasts more than 2.6 million followers—recently showed his fans how to make a delicious Thai-inspired steak sauce that comes together in minutes.
Nam Jim Jaew is a chilli-based dipping sauce that pairs perfectly with steak, giving the meat a delightfully zingy punch of flavour. Even better, it’s so easy to make, and requires mostly cupboard staple ingredients you’ve probably already got at home.
In the video’s caption, he said: “This honestly blew my mind. It was absolutely delicious, and you must try it!
“This is Thai dipping sauce, it’s amazing with steak, in fact the full dish is known as crying tiger steak.”
Here’s how you can make it at home.
Method
Grab a pan and place it over low/medium heat on the stove. Add the Thai rice and lightly toast it until it turns a lovely golden brown colour.
Then, using a pestle and mortar, grind it up until it resembles a rough powder.
Chop the shallot, spring onions, and coriander. Add these to a bowl with the rice powder, then add the lime juice, chilli flakes, fish sauce, tamarind, and brown sugar. Give it a really good stir until all of the ingredients are fully combined.
Leave it to sit for around 30 minutes before serving with your choice of cooked steak, cut into slices.
