The beautiful city in one of Europe’s most dangerous countries that Brits flock to | World | News

British tourists flock to many beautiful places around the world during the summer months. One of them happens to be a stunning city in what is officially one of the most dangerous countries in Europe. Yet it remains extremely popular with holidaymakers from the UK.

Paphos, a coastal city in Cyprus, attracts thousands of visitors each year with its warm weather, historic landmarks and fantastic atmosphere. But despite being seen as a safe and welcoming destination, Cyprus is ranked the fourth most dangerous country in Europe in 2025, according to data from the World Population Review.

The ranking is based on factors like political instability and organised crime, but experts say these risks rarely affect tourists.

According to official figures, the country has a very low homicide rate of just 0.4 per 100,000 people, and violent crime is rare.

Most visits are trouble-free, and petty theft is the most common issue in tourist areas.

And it’s very clear that the safety label hasn’t stopped Brits from heading to Paphos in large numbers.

According to Kathimerini Cyprus, more than 3.73 million tourists arrived in Cyprus between January and October 2024, and the UK was the biggest contributor, making up about 36% of all visitors.

In December 2024 alone, over 31,500 British tourists flew to Cyprus, accounting for nearly a quarter of all arrivals that month.

Paphos itself plays a big part in those numbers. The UNESCO-listed city is packed with ancient history, including the Tombs of the Kings, the House of Dionysos mosaics, and Paphos Castle by the harbour.

There are also golden beaches like Coral Bay, family-friendly resorts, and stunning villages nearby.

The beaches around Paphos have clear waters and soft sand, and are perfect for everything from snorkelling, swimming to just absorbing the sunshine.

Visitors can also try golf at Aphrodite Hills, stroll along the waterfront, or enjoy fresh Mediterranean food in local tavernas.

The city’s relaxed pace and low crime levels also make it popular with couples, families and older travellers.

Getting there is easy. You can fly directly from the UK to Paphos International Airport, with regular flights from Ryanair, Jet2, TUI, easyJet, and British Airways.
