The Mamma Mia! movies are a slice of happiness and escapism for most, transporting us to the a gorgeous Greek island where groups of equally gorgeous people burst out in song at any given moment. It’s one of the most successful movie musicalsthanks to classic ABBA tracks and a starry cast packed with the likes of Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Pierce Brosnan, Julie Walters, and Cher in 2018’s Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. No surprise then, that rumours of a third movie would eventually stir. The box office figures as well as the cultural impact alone have attested to its success and with a 10 year wait inbetween films one and two, who is to say a third won’t be on the horizon?

Lily James, the star of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, has come out and teased a potential new film for the franchise – could a threequel be on the cards? James spoke in a recent interview with Screen Rant while promoting her new film Italian Dawn, which is an Italian period picture, the star spoke of her excitement at any future movies and said she’d love to return as a writer for the movie.

James said: “I would do Mamma Mia 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. I think probably every single actor involved would say that without exception. It is just those rare moments in your life where something’s pure joy, and that was pure joy. So I hope they want me in it. I haven’t heard a thing.”

James recalled her time filming Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again: “Do you know what I feel like I did – I kind of predicted the last version of the story, so let me have a think. I think I could probably come up with Mamma Mia three. I’ll call Judy Craymer and get a writing credit or something if she won’t let me be in it.”

So, with that being said, can we hope for a third film? The film’s producer Judy Craymer has previously stated, in an interview with the Daily Mail, that Mamma Mia‘s story was always intended to be told in a trilogy. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and see what the next few years hold for the joyful franchise.

James’ new movie Finally Dawn is in cinemas from July 18.
