A list of five hydration-boosting foods has been put together to help Brits stay hydrated against the harmful heat rays. The UK is currently experiencing its third heatwave of the year, with temperatures expected to hit 30C over the weekend. It is crucial that people remain hydrated throughout the day to support both physical and mental health. However, it isn’t always as simple as drinking enough plain water.

Dr Cheryl Lythgoe, Matron at Benenden Health, a not-for-profit private healthcare provider, said: “Hydration is the foundation of good health, but sipping on plain water isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Our bodies are made up of 60% water, so staying hydrated is essential to support good physical health and our mental wellbeing too.”

As a result she has provided five foods that will help boost water intake and fuel your body with essential nutrients.

Cucumbers

The salad stable is a great way to boost your hydration as cucumbers are 96% water. They are also rich in Vitamin K which is crucial for maintaining bone health.

Watermelon

Watermelon is one of the most hydrating fruits you can enjoy as it is made up of around 92% of water. Not only is it refreshing on a nice hot day, but it is also full of nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin A, and magnesium. Watermelon also contains an amino acid called citrulline, which can help improve blood flow and reduce muscle soreness.

Soup

Broth-based soups can contribute to hydration due to the high-water content. Enjoying a soup for lunch is a great option for those who struggle to drink enough fluids throughout the day, as the water base supports hydration levels. A gazpacho is the perfect cold soup option for the warm weather.

Jelly

Jelly is also surprisingly a great water-rich food source. In addition to its water content, jelly is typically made with gelatine, which helps to retain moisture and can be especially soothing for those recovering from illness or dehydration.

Strawberries

For those looking for a naturally sweet boost, strawberries are a stronger contender when it comes to the hydration scale leader board. The fruit made up of 91% water and packed with antioxidant supporting heart health and brain function can be enjoyed in many ways such as a smoothie, fruit salad, or infused in water.
