‘Strange’ thing drivers should do this weekend before setting off

As the UK experiences what is likely to be confirmed as its third heatwave of the year, with temperatures soaring above 30C, there will be plenty to enjoy.

But it can bring problems, too, in many respects. This is certainly true when it comes to your car.

Specialists at Budget Insurance are advising drivers on essential maintenance checks to ensure their vehicles are summer-ready.

Car checks to do during the heatwave

Check your battery

Contrary to common belief, hot weather can cause more damage to your battery than cold temperatures, leading to internal damage and a reduced lifespan. If your car is taking longer to start and the interior lights are dimming when you turn the engine over, it might be time for a replacement, especially if the battery is more than three years old.

Monitor your tyres

Tyres tend to expand in hot weather, which can lead to cracking of the rubber and an increased risk of a blowout. Make sure all your tyres meet UK and EU regulations by having a tread depth of at least 1.6mm.

It’s also crucial to inflate your tyres to the correct pressure. Underinflated tyres increase drag on the wheels, making the engine work harder and consume more fuel, and they can also cause blowouts.

Top up your fluids

Your coolant prevents your engine from overheating during the warmer months, so it’s important to check its level more frequently, particularly before embarking on a long journey.

The experts advised: “Strange as it may sound, you should top it up with both water and antifreeze, because a lack of the latter could damage your engine when temperatures begin to drop.”

Use your air conditioning wisely

In sweltering conditions, it’s recommended to air out your vehicle by leaving windows and doors open for a short period before setting off, rather than immediately cranking up the air conditioning. This can help save on fuel costs and boost engine efficiency.

For brief trips, it might be more economical to simply drive with the windows down instead of using the air con. Additionally, parking in shaded spots can keep your car cooler and lessen the initial need for air conditioning.

Plan your route

It’s wise to research the locations of service stations and charging points along your journey. EV drivers can utilise apps like Chargemap, Chargepoint, and Octopus Electroverse to plan their routes effectively.

“With tens of millions of leisure journeys made by car over the summer months, motorists should ensure their vehicle is roadworthy before they set off, whether on holiday or for a day trip,” said Chris Lawson, head of car insurance at Budget Insurance.

“Cars can struggle at this time of year, contending with hot temperatures and traffic jams, so it’s important that drivers do all they can to minimise the risk of breaking down.”
