Remove mould from the washing machine seal

If your washing machine has begun to smell, it’s time to inspect the front door seal, as it’s a breeding ground for mould and bacteria.

The rubber seal of a washing machine is infamous for accumulating mould, which can impart a musty smell to both your laundry and your home.

The Queen of Clean disclosed a simple household item that will “banish stinky odours and mould build-up in your washing machine rubber seal” – baking soda.

Baking soda has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties that make it a great cleaning agent, but how should you use it?

Lynsey explained: “Sprinkle [baking soda] into the rubber seal, spritz with water, scrub with a small brush, leave for 10 minutes, and then run a rinse cycle.”

She added: “The [baking soda] will absorb the smells and effortlessly clean the seal. Say goodbye to a smelly washing machine.”

Baking soda (also known as bicarbonate of soda) is a common household staple that can bought at the likes of Aldi for 59p, or at any other supermarket, such as Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury’s.

This gem of advice was met with enthusiastic approval from Lynsey’s followers, who commented on the Instagram post.

“So good,” one posted. “Fab tip, I will try this,” said another. Somebody else added: “You’ve inspired me to vamoosh my washing machine today.”

To help prevent the formation of mould, it is helpful to leave the washing machine door open after every wash.

This enables air to circulate around the washing machine to help dry it out and make it less hospitable for mould.

The rubber seal, however, may still develop mould because of its hidden positioning, which can store moisture.

To keep your washing machine sparkly clean, it’s recommended to wipe the washing machine seal on a monthly basis.
