An American musical comedy that has been labelled as a “masterpiece” is now streaming on a popular streaming platform. This 1952 classic has also topped Rotten Tomatoes’ list of The Best Musicals of All Time. Singin’ In the Rain, was directed by and starred Gene Kelly. The film follows a couple who are finding their feet in a changing cinematic landscape – and you can now watch it on NOWTV.
The musical’s synopsis reads: “A spoof of the turmoil that afflicted the movie industry in the late 1920s when movies went from silent to sound. When two silent movie stars’, Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont, latest movie is made into a musical a chorus girl is brought in to dub Lina’s speaking and singing. Don is on top of the world until Lina finds out.”
Alongside Kelly, the musical also starred Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds, and featured Jean Hagen, Millard Mitchell, Rita Moreno and Cyd Charisse.
In interviews, Reynolds has said she “learned a lot from Gene Kelly”, stating that he was “a perfectionist and a disciplinarian”.
The classic musical has a huge score of 100% from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes, who bill it as “masterpiece”. Their critics consensus states: “Clever, incisive, and funny, Singin’ in the Rain is a masterpiece of the classical Hollywood musical.”
One critic said: “To put it bluntly, this is one of the funniest films ever made.”
Another critic wrote a glowing review, stating: “Singin’ in the Rain makes you feel transported to Hollywood of the 1920s through beautiful production design highlighting the beauty of an era of black and white film with vibrant colours that feel fitting of that period.”
“You would never know that this wasn’t produced with the intention of creating a near-perfect masterpiece. The results of the difficult production are seamless,” another added.
One fan wrote in their IMDb user review: “This is such a great film that if you ever get the chance to see this at the movies then DO IT.”
