Five stunning hotspots are the relaxed way to enjoy Maldives-level bea | Europe | Travel

If there’s one name that conjures up visions of sun-soaked luxury, it’s  the Maldives. With over 160 resort islands offering powdery white sand, turquoise waters and those iconic overwater villas, it’s the definition of tropical indulgence.

But even paradise has its drawbacks. With a 10-hour flight from the UK and eye-watering peak-season fares, it’s not exactly the easiest getaway. And after touching down in Malé, many travellers still face another journey by boat or even seaplane—picturesque, perhaps, but not for everyone reports The Telegraph.

Luckily, Europe is hiding a few secrets of its own. There are several sun-drenched destinations offering all the blissful beauty of the Maldives—without the long-haul hassle. From man-made lagoons to quiet Mediterranean coves, here’s where to find your slice of tropical heaven right here in Europe (and even in the UK!).

Analipsi, Crete – Floating Luxury in a Lagoon

Crete may be known for its beaches, but Stella Island Resort in Analipsi takes things a step further. Despite being inland, this adults-only escape has crafted a Maldivian-style experience with thatched-roof bungalows built around a vast man-made lagoon.

Step straight from your private deck into the water, sip cocktails at the pool bar and let the illusion take hold.

From £272 per night
Verdict: Perfectly executed style, but without natural scenery.
Maldives-alike rating: 6/10

Ksamil, Albania – Budget Beauty by the Ionian Sea

A rising star of the Albanian Riviera, Ksamil has grabbed attention with its crystal-clear water and untouched islets. In the busy season, though, it can feel more like a bustling seaside town than a private escape.

Avoid the crowds at Arameras Beach Resort, just two kilometres from town. With a private beach, detached villas and Ionian views all the way to Crete, it offers serenity without the Maldives price tag.

From £95 per night
Verdict: Scenic and peaceful, though not completely secluded.
Maldives-alike rating: 6/10

Costa Smeralda, Sardinia – Glamour Meets Tranquillity

The clue’s in the name—Costa Smeralda means ‘Emerald Coast’, and it lives up to its billing with glistening green-blue waters and pristine beaches. The area is known for luxury, but you can still find quieter corners away from the glitz.

Hotel Sporting, near Porto Rotondo, has rooms with doors opening right onto a private beach. One minute to the sea, one minute to top-tier Italian dining. Bellissimo!

From £222 per night
Verdict: Breathtaking scenery, but a touch too formal for island-style ease.
Maldives-alike rating: 7/10

Pampelonne Beach, France – Relaxed Riviera Charm

Stretching along the Saint-Tropez coast, Pampelonne Beach offers five kilometres of soft sand and clear water. Behind the beach bars and boutiques, you’ll find more laid-back escapes like Prairies de la Mer.

These beachside wooden lodges come with sun decks and sea views, not to mention pools, family fun, and the odd beach party.

From £105 per night
Verdict: Great value and setting, but still has a buzzier vibe.
Maldives-alike rating: 7/10

Carbis Bay, Cornwall – A British Paradise (When the Sun’s Out)

Believe it or not, Cornwall can match the Maldives on a sunny day. Carbis Bay offers white sand, turquoise water and rugged coastal beauty—no passport needed.

For the best experience, check into Carbis Bay Hotel. While the main building overlooks the bay, its beachfront suites bring you right to the sand with panoramic views.

From £325 per night
Verdict: Ideal for a sunny UK staycation—when the weather plays along.
Maldives-alike rating: 8/10
