Warning: One of your PlayStation and Xbox games is about to disappear forever

Gaming fans only have a few months left to enjoy a high-profile gaming flop before it’s no longer playable.

Anthem represented something of a departure for developer BioWare, a studio that was famous for creating narrative-driven role-playing games like Mass Effect and Knights of the Old Republic.

The multiplayer-centric shooter saw players team up to complete various missions in a shared world containing live service elements.

Unfortunately, however, Anthem wasn’t particularly well received by critics and fans, and failed to reach sales targets.

Now, roughly six years after making its debut back in 2019, BioWare has announced plans to take the game offline for good.

This means that from January 12, 2026, anybody with a copy of Anthem for PlayStation, Xbox or PC will no longer be able to play the game, even in single-player.

The news was announced by BioWare on the Anthem website: “We have an important update to share regarding Anthem.

“After careful consideration, we will be sunsetting Anthem on January 12, 2026.

“This means that the game will still be playable online for the next 180+ days. As of today, you can no longer purchase in-game premium currency, but you can still use your remaining balance until the servers go offline.”

In a separate FAQ, BioWare confirms that the game won’t be playable in any form once the servers are offline.

“Anthem was designed to be an online-only title so once the servers go offline, the game will no longer be playable,” BioWare adds.

If you already own a copy of Anthem, you can still download and play the game until next January.

However, users will no longer be able to purchase in-game currency, although you can use any credits already in your account.

BioWare also confirmed that Anthem will be removed from the EA Play subscription service on August 15, and that no jobs were lost as a result of the decision.

“Unleash Your Power,” reads the official description. “In a world left unfinished by the gods, a shadowy faction threatens all humankind. Only you stand between the Dominion and the ancient power they covet. Team up as heroes in this cooperative action-RPG from BioWare and EA.”
