The humble avocado is now a staple food item for many UK households and while it can be enjoyed in various ways, you can’t beat serving it on a piece of toast.
Avocados gained notoriety in recent years after becoming a symbol of overspending when Australian billionaire and luxury real estate mogul Tim Gurner implied that young people can’t afford to buy their own homes because they’re wasting money on ‘fancy’ avocado on toast. Nowadays, you can order the so-called ‘fancy’ meal in most cafes and you can pay more than £10 for the pleasure in some cases. While this isn’t exactly breaking the bank, it is a lot cheaper to rustle up the dish at home yourself.Avocado on toast may be basic but it’s quick and easy to make, giving you a tasty snack in as little as five minutes. But mashed avocado on its own can be a little bland, so food experts recommend adding one simple ingredient to transform the taste – and that’s olive oil.
A light drizzle of olive oil helps to add a delicious richness to the flavour of the avocado, making it taste a lot creamier than simply serving it on its own.
Recipe expert Munching with Mariyah says: “Olive oil adds yet another layer of flavour and richness. Don’t be afraid to use olive oil, it’s super nutritious and has amazing health benefits.”
Food experts recommend using a high-quality extra virgin olive oil as these usually have a stronger, slightly peppery or fruity flavour that perfectly complements the mild flavour of the avocado.
Plus, as an added bonus, olive oil is highly nutritious as it is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids, which can help lower ‘bad’ cholesterol, and it also contains antioxidants including vitamin E.
Olive oil producer 41 Olive explains: “Avocado toast has become a popular and delicious breakfast staple, and drizzling olive oil over it can take it to the next level. However, drizzling olive oil over avocado toast can be a tricky task, and it’s easy to overdo it or underdo it.
“The quality of the olive oil you use can make a big difference in the taste and texture of your avocado toast. Choose a high-quality olive oil that has a robust and fruity flavour. Extra-virgin olive oil is a great choice as it is made from the first cold pressing of the olives and has a rich flavor. Look for olive oils that are labeled “cold-pressed,” “unfiltered,” or “organic” for the best results.
“To achieve the perfect drizzle, it’s important to have control over the flow of the olive oil. Using a pour spout or dispenser can help you control the flow of the oil and ensure that you don’t overdo it.”
Experts at 41 Olive recommend drizzling the olive oil over your avocado on toast in a zig-zag motion, starting at one end of the toast and moving towards the other end to give a balanced, even drizzle that isn’t too overpowering.
It adds: “Drizzling olive oil over avocado toast can be a simple and delicious way to elevate your breakfast. By using high-quality olive oil, a pour spout or dispenser, starting with a small amount, and using a zig-zag motion, you can achieve the perfect drizzle every time.
“Remember to experiment with different olive oils and quantities to find the perfect flavour for your taste buds.”
