3 dog breeds that are ‘terrible’ for being high-energy

Dogs are more than just pets – they’re part of the family, and they deserve a lot of love and attention. If you’ve never had a dog before but are considering getting one, you’ll need to put plenty of thought into the type of breed you choose.

No two dogs are the same, and there are certain breeds that are a lot more high-energy than others. Depending on your circumstances, it might not be possible to give them the exercise and training that they need in order to thrive. According to Will Atherton, a canine behavioural specialist, there are three in particular that he would ‘never’ own.

Three dog breeds a canine expert would ‘never’ own

1. Border collie

This iconic black and white breed is known for working hard out in the fields, herding sheep. But if you’re considering getting one as a pet, it’s worth noting that they aren’t always easy to care for.

Will said: “To be honest they’ve never really been a breed that I’ve overly liked. Their energy level is way too high, and although I know I could train them to high levels, I don’t have much interest in high levels of obedience or trick training.

“For me, I just want a chill, calm, mellow dog that can hang out with me no matter where we go.”

2. Belgian Malinois

This breed is very loyal and loving, but if you’re after a mellow dog, then the Belgian Malinois might not be for you.

Similar to border collies, Will says these dogs are extremely high-energy.

Will explained: “Awesome, insanely impressive, I love my trainer and behaviourist friends that have them and have achieved insane feats, but it’s just not for me.”

3. Cocker spaniel

These adorable dogs are very popular pets here in the UK.

Will said: “As a man who does take my labrador out hunting in the shooting season every year, I love watching the cocker spaniels work. But that energy that doesn’t shut off when you get them home the way it does for a labrador, would be a terrible fit for my calm, relaxed insistence in the home.”
