New rom-com hailed as 'profound' by critics now on Amazon Prime

Amazon Prime viewers are being treated to a brand new rom-com starring Pedro Pascal and Dakota Johnson. Materialists is a 2025 American romantic comedy film written and directed by Celine Song, who formerly directed popular movie Past Lives.

The film stars Chris Evans, Zoë Winters, Marin Ireland, and Louisa Jacobson alongside Pascal and Johnson. Materialists is set against the backdrop of New York City’s luxury-driven dating culture, and it follows a love triangle between a matchmaker, her aspiring actor ex-boyfriend, and a charming millionaire.

The film’s synopsis reads: “Materialists tells the story of Lucy (Johnson), a high-end matchmaker in New York City. She finds herself in the middle of a love triangle when she starts dating dreamy financier Harry (Pascal), at the same time her ex-boyfriend, John (Evans), a struggling actor and part-time cater waiter, walks back into her life.”

The film has been receiving mainly positive reviews and is currently holding an 81% score from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Their consensus reads: “A mature deconstruction of the conventional rom-com, Materialists provides its trio of swoon-worthy stars some of their meatiest material yet while reaffirming Celine Song as a modern master of relationship dramas.”

One critic said: “A seductive, zippy, and, dare we say it, more accessible love story that, beneath the surface, has some profound insights about romance.”

The audience is slightly more critical with a rating of 67%, they state: “Materialists takes its time unfolding a modern love story that’s more drama than the comedy it promises, yet a stellar cast keeps it relatable and engaging.”

One audience reviewer described the film as having a “great storyline” with another adding that they “loved it”.

“Great storyline. You think you have the plot figured out, then it surprises you. And just when you thought there wasn’t any new love story plots, this movie unfolds a unique twists,” said a viewer.

Materialists is available to stream on Amazon Prime.
