Spain heatwave warning as tourists told to do 1 thing | World | News

Brits holidaying in Majorca will need to take extra precautions amid an extreme weather alert. With temperatures predicted to reach 40C, most of the island has been issued an amber weather warning for today.

Jason Nicholls, lead international forecaster at ACCUWeather told The Express that most parts of Majorca will see highs of above 35C today. The forecaster believes the mercury could soar to as high as 39C and that severe damages to people and properties may occur, especially to those vulnerable or in exposed areas. The amber warning came into place at 12pm and will remain until 8pm this evening.

Temperatures are expected to fall slightly on Thursday, but they are due to then rise again over the weekend. These heatwave conditions could last for a couple of days.

To stay safe in the scorching heat, Mr Nicholls is urging locals and tourists to do one thing as much as possible before the heat wanes next week – and that is of course drinking a lot of water.

He said: “The amber alert is for Wednesday, June 25, the high today will be above 35C.

“Thursday and Friday highs will be around 32C or 33C, then can be around 35C from Saturday through Monday. The heat will wane around Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.

“The best thing in the heat is to drink plenty of water and avoid strenuous activity during the peak heating of the day, if possible.”

Meanwhile, mainland Spain is bracing for the most extreme heatwave of the year, with meteorologists warning that temperatures could hit 46C over the next couple of days, thanks to a plume of African heat

Weather expert Nacho Espinós has also issued stark warnings about the scorching heat, advising residents to “remain indoors as much as possible” and avoid any strenuous outdoor activities. He added that “index values could easily surpass 50°C in parts of Portugal and Spain later this month.”

The heat will intensify by Friday with temperatures exceeding 40C forecast across the entire Guadalquivir valley in Seville and Cordoba, with similar temperatures forecast in southern Extremadura, parts of Castilla-La Mancha and the Ebro valley.

Temperatures are only expected to rise further on Saturday with the Guadalquivir valley potentially reaching 42-43C.
