Lady Eliza Spencer has revealed that she posed a heartbreaking 6-word question after learning about the tragic death of her aunt, Princess Diana. Born in 1992, Eliza was just five when the late royal died aged 36 on August 31, 1997.
Revealing how her father, Earl Charles Spencer – who was the late royal’s brother – broke the tragic news to her and her siblings, including her twin sister, Lady Amelia Spencer. She said: “We thought it couldn’t be real.”
Speaking to The Standard, in an interview published today, the 32-year-old recalled how she then asked her father, “But not in real life, Daddy?”
Eliza’s comment after speculation that Charles is feuding with his children, including his twin daughters.
The 65-year-old is known to have have not attended the weddings of both Lady Kitty and Lady Amelia in 2021 and 2023.
Speaking of her aunt: “We were five, but we remember going to the beach with her, and her being a very gentle and kind and sweet figure in our lives.”
The late royal, who was extremely close to Charles throughout their childhood, spent precious time with her nieces and nephews in South Africa during what would become one of her last family gatherings.
Previously speaking during a recent appearance on the male version of ITV’s Loose Women, Charles described losing his sister as “such an amputation”.
He added: “You grow up with these people, they are your flesh and blood, they’re with you forever – and then they’re gone.”
Revealing how he would instinctively try and call Diana after her death, he added: “For years after Diana died, I would think, ‘I must ring her and tell her something,’ because we shared the same sense of humour.”
