Peace lilies will thrive if you ditch soil for alternative method

If you want to bring the outside in and add some colour and life to your home, then you can’t go wrong with plants. Even if you’re a beginner, there’s a houseplant for everyone, and many are fairly easy to look after.

One example is the peace lily, a beautiful plant with glossy green leaves and white flowers. Like all plants, they do need a bit of care in order to thrive. But if you’ve been struggling with yours, then it could be worth ditching the soil altogether in favour of something a little different.

That’s according to the experts at House Digest, who say that there’s a ‘foolproof’ way to encourage your peace lilies to grow and thrive – and it doesn’t involve any soil at all.

They said: “Peace lilies are not demanding plants to grow, and growing them in water prevents all the pests and diseases that are associated with soil pots, reducing your workload to achieve healthy flowers.”

This method was also shared on TikTok by @moon_muffin_, who explained how easy it is to grow your peace lilies in water – and how beneficial it can be too.

She described the trick as ‘really simple’ but with ‘really pretty’ results. The first thing you need to do is rinse off all of the dirt from your peace lily’s roots, making sure you do this really carefully so you don’t damage them.

It can be beneficial to leave the plant out for a while to dry out before you do this, as this will make the process easier. Now is the time to trim off any roots that are rotting, before you plant it in the water.

Then, take a glass vase with a wide enough neck for the roots to fit through. Pour enough distilled water into it to cover only the roots of the plant, and place it inside.

According to the gardening pros at Lawn.au, growing peace lilies in water requires ‘minimal maintenance’ as they are ‘wonderfully resilient’ plants.

The water should be changed weekly in order to prevent any bacteria build-up, but apart from that, you can just care for it as normal. Peace lilies like to be in indirect sunlight, and to boost growth even more, you can add a few drops of liquid fertiliser into the water.

And as always, be sure to trim off any leaves that have died or look like they’re on their way out, as this will lead to a much healthier growth.
